The Spur, honors the Espuela or "Spur" Cattle Company of 1883, a 242,000-acre ranch on the southern Texas plains, just east of present-day Lubbock.
This saddle was inspired by one used by Fed Horsbrough, a manager of the ranch. The original is now at the West Texas A&M University's Plains Museum in Canyon, Texas.
The Spur marks another step in Texas cowboy saddle evolution. It is not yet a full seat, but a seat jockey has been incorporated on the half-seat, to prevent chafing. To hold the seat jockey in place, two more strings have been added, to bring the total to eight. The front wear jockey has been shifted from under the rigging, to over it.
